Sustainable Human(e) Settlements: The urban challenge
17-21 September 2012
The CIB working group W110 (Informal Settlements and Affordable Housing), the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg and the Sustainable Human Settlements research group, within the CSIR’s Built Environment unit, with their partners are hosting the conference Sustainable Human(e) Settlements: the urban challenge from the 17th to the 21st of September 2012. This is an important event and coincides with important revisions of process in South Africa with regards to the delivery of housing and human settlements.
We look forward to your participation in this event where new visions will be presented by the various partners.
Please catch our early bird registration date. Once you have registered on the website, we will send you an invoice to allow for payment.
As the event draws closer, we would like to involve you in some of the developments towards the conference:
We are excited to share with you the start of filming for two short movies SUSTAINABLE HUMAN(E) SETTLEMENTS - AN OPEN BUILDING APPROACH TO RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN SOUTH AFRICA. The movie will be filmed in The Netherlands by Beate Lendt (iximage, Amsterdam) and in South Africa by Nduka Mntambo (FADA, UJ, Johannesburg) and his students from the multimedia department. The movies will be launched at the conference. We also have some excellent speakers lined up and this will be announced soon.
We also want to share with you that we are actively engaging with various role players in housing processes in South Africa and intend making this event something that will enrich the current debates on human settlements in South Africa. The conference will be a place to test out ideas for actual solutions for housing and human settlements, in the belief that we have spent too many years finding fault with delivery and finance processes in housing, with very little contributions being made towards actual solutions.
The work of the National Planning Commission in South Africa towards sustainable human settlements will inform some of the conference discussions. This is in continuation of the processes initiated when we presented our vision for human settlements as part of the Department of Human Settlement’s social contract process in 2010.
We hope, through your participation in the conference, that you will add your voice to ours in calling for innovation in the delivery of housing - towards the achievement of more humane settlements.
See you in September!
